2012

In June of 2012, Kathleen Kennedy was named co-chairman of Lucasfilm, working alongside George Lucas until he retired. Now she is the president of Lucasfilm and on Fortune.com’s list of most powerful women. In her 40+ year career, Kennedy has produced over 60 movies, including Jurassic Park, E.T.: the Extra-Terrestrial, The Goonies, Schindler’s List, and, most recently, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

With a capable successor in place, Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney for $4 billion. Lucas initially wanted to release the seventh installment of the Star Wars series before selling Lucasfilm but ended up selling in 2012, to be able to spend more time with his family in retirement. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released in December of 2015 by Disney, under the complete leadership of Kennedy.
